Devotee

Devotees are priests – fanatical followers of the divine will of the gods. Stringent religious adherences and observances of taboo, prayer, and sacrifice allow them to draw on the power of their deities, sometimes performing miraculous feats.

As a key member of most communities, the Devotee acts as a link and guide to the afterlife and the will of the gods. They are a valuable ally to have in a party, not least because of their healing abilities and wisdom on religious matters.

Since the beginning of civilisation, those who exulted and gave sacrifice were often spared the wrath of the gods. Those who chose or were chosen to dispense the teachings of the gods were the first Devotees, often wielding great influence and power amongst their people.

The will of the gods is perceived in many things, from the rising and setting of the sun, the changing of the seasons or a bounteous or failing harvest. Each deity embodies a different aspect of daily life, whether physical entities (sun, moon, sea, land, etc.) or ideals (bravery, luck, justice, etc.).

Many cultures hold whole pantheons of deities as sacred, praying to all, or to the most appropriate figure depending upon their need. Some exclusively worship one god, seen as a patron of their people, who will protect them if correctly appeased.
